The Royal Reveal: World of Freddie Press Conference in Budapest

3. 10. 2025

What does it take to bring Freddie Mercury’s world back to life?
At a press conference in Budapest, we offered the first glimpse of what we believe will be one of the most emotionally powerful and visually stunning exhibitions ever dedicated to his legacy: Freddie The Exhibition, opening in 2026 at the House of Music Hungary.

The event, held in early September, welcomed journalists from Hungarian media — including TV, radio, print, and online platforms — and featured speeches by András Batta (General Director of the House of Music Hungary), Márton Horn (Director of the institution), Peter Freestone (Freddie Mercury’s personal assistant), and Tomas Hykel (curator and founder of World of Freddie).

A New Way to See Freddie

This isn’t your typical music exhibition. House of Music Hungary (HOMH) offers an entirely unique approach to storytelling. With cutting-edge technology and immersive design, the venue is famous for turning every visitor into an active part of the experience. As Tomas Hykel shared, “This exhibition isn’t about watching. It’s about feeling. About stepping inside Freddie’s world.”

From GPS-guided headphones that adapt the soundtrack to your exact location, to holograms, large-scale projections, and interactive rooms, this is an experience that pulls you into the life, creativity, and spirit of one of music’s greatest icons.

“The concept of Queen is to be regal and majestic. Glamour is part of us, and we want to be dandy.” We took these words as guidance when bringing this exhibition to life.

More Than Music: Freddie, the Man Behind the Fame

The exhibition is about Freddie as a person — the private world he built away from the spotlight. Visitors will walk through nine themed spaces filled with hundreds of original items: from his drawings, handwritten notes, and furniture to stage-worn clothes and emotional letters. The exhibition features around 600 items acquired by Tomas Hykel, the founder of World of Freddie, together with 400 treasured pieces generously loaned by collectors and institutions.

As Peter Freestone shared at the event, “You’ll see Freddie the performer — but more importantly, you’ll meet Freddie the friend, the lover of beauty, the man who made a family out of those around him.”

A Tribute That Goes Beyond Nostalgia

The timing and location of the exhibition were not chosen randomly. It marks two significant milestones:

  • What would have been Freddie’s 80th birthday in 2026
  • The 40th anniversary of Queen’s legendary 1986 concert in Budapest

With these emotional anniversaries in mind, the exhibition takes on added weight — not just as a tribute, but as a living memory. We made it clear during the conference that this is not a wax museum. This is a celebration, an invitation, a story told with love and honesty.

Media Buzz and Growing Excitement

The response? Huge.

The event has already reached across the entire Hungarian media landscape:

  • 14 national TV mentions
  • 21 appearances on radio stations
  • Coverage in major print outlets
  • More than 130 online features on everything from music blogs to culture magazines to travel portals

It’s already being described as both a major cultural milestone and an unmissable tourism experience for 2026.
