Freddie drank to mark the moment — whether it was raising a toast with close friends, winding down after a show, or throwing one of his famously lavish parties. He enjoyed the sensuality of it — the taste, the fizz, the chill of a glass in hand. From vodka and tonic at night to Earl Grey in the morning, his taste in drinks was as layered as his personality — elegant, indulgent, and always on his terms.
Tea in the Morning, Vodka by Midnight
As Peter Freestone recalls, Freddie’s daily rhythm had its own drink menu:
“In the morning, it was Earl Grey tea. In the afternoon, champagne. And in the evening, vodka and tonic.”
Freddie wasn’t one for moderation, but he wasn’t reckless either. His drinks were rituals. Part performance, part pleasure.
The Champagne Standard
Freddie was particular about his champagne. And he had the taste, and budget, to be. Among his favourites was Louis Roederer Cristal, a prestige cuvée that could easily run £10,000–12,000 a bottle depending on vintage. Soft and elegant, with no sting. He even joked you could wash your hands in it — “and they wouldn’t feel sticky.”
A Fridge Fit for a Frontman
Freddie’s kitchen fridge at Garden Lodge was legendary in its own quiet way. It wasn’t packed with leftovers or snacks — it was lined with prestige champagne, mostly Cristal, along with sparkling Perrier, fine beers, and the occasional luxury water. And tucked carefully on the side? A single bottle of orange juice — for balance. It was a display of taste and ritual. A backstage setup for a life lived in high style.
People loved to label Freddie: outrageous, decadent, wild. But even in his drinking, his choices were more refined than the myths suggested. He loved ritual, luxury, and beauty — and the drinks he chose reflected that.
It wasn’t about image. It was about mood, ceremony, and joy. And yes, sometimes the excess matched the rock-and-roll lifestyle.
But he wasn’t a messy drinker. He was a stylish one.
“I live for sex, drugs and rock and roll. It’s my style. I’ve always been this way.”
It wasn’t bravado. It was honesty. And above all, it was on his terms.
