Behind the curtain

How does the introverted, Zanzibar-born child of a London-based immigrant family grow up to become one of the world’s most charismatic rock stars? What lies behind Freddie’s iconic military costumes, the hand gestures that moved crowds in the tens of thousands, and Queen’s spectacular stage productions?

The book Freddie – Beyond the Curtain lifts the lid on every aspect of this symbolic book title, offering a glimpse behind the scenes of the band’s unforgettable concerts and into the private life of the ordinary man behind the star, and behind the geopolitical Iron Curtain that Queen broke through as the first Western band to do so in 1986.

This book is the official companion publication to the major exhibition put together by the House of Music Hungary to mark a double anniversary: 80 years since Freddie Mercury’s birth and the 40th anniversary of Queen’s historic Budapest concert. Drawing on primary sources, original images and authentic personal recollections, this book goes in search of the myth. By exploring the miracle of the 70,000-capacity crowd at the Népstadion, the rigidity of Kádár-era cultural politics, and the technical brilliance of the film made of the concert, it does not reinforce the image of the untouchable star, instead bringing a tangible human reality closer to the audience.

This unique volume paints a fascinating portrait of a highly self-aware artist in whom the deepest human vulnerability and unrestrained extravagance existed in constant creative tension – a man whose distinctive body of work and powerful symbolic gestures made him a universal cultural legend.
